A Lesson

Candice and Steve have worked for me for a little over a year. They are both quite good at what they do for me, but here of late they have been missing a beat here and there. Their latest project can only be described as a failure. It was just a flop. The project they put forth just didn't; cut it. Much of the problem, I'm sure, has been because of the personal relationship that has developed between the two of them. The emotional intensity between them has sapped their creative juices and left little for work.

I have asked them to come in to see me so we can discuss their work. They don't really know what I intend to discuss, but they are both smart people, and they should have a really good idea of what the subject will be. After all, a directed visit to my office is never a good thing. I follow the age old maxim of "Praise in public, criticize in private."

My phone chimes. It is my secretary on the intercom line. "Mr. Buster, Candace and Steve are here for the 3:00 meeting," she says.

"Fine. Send them in," I reply.

They enter my office. I invite them in, "Come in, come in!"

I am sitting at my desk. I have removed the chairs that are normally provided for my office visitors so there are no places for them to sit. They look around, but are left awkwardly standing in front of my desk. It's time for our discussion, which I'm sure they will find riveting.
